Stop Ecocide:
Why Michael Stober Supports the Movement
For a Sustainable Future: Recognizing Environmental Destruction as an International Crime

Recognizing Environmental Destruction as a Crime
Every day, forests are cleared, oceans are polluted, and entire ecosystems are destroyed – often without legal consequences. These massive assaults on nature are called ecocide. However, unlike war crimes or crimes against humanity, there is currently no international law that consistently prosecutes environmental destruction.
Michael Stober, CEO of Landgut Stober, is committed to changing that. As the first German entrepreneur to sign the open letter of the Stop Ecocide movement, he joins other leading business representatives in calling on governments to take action.
Michael Stober: "Criminalize Ecocide – for People and Nature"
"Those who act against nature act against humanity. The enormous profits of a few have devastating consequences for nature and humankind. Let’s criminalize ecocide and protect both people and the planet."
With these words, Michael Stober highlights why an international ecocide law is urgently needed. Businesses bear great responsibility—not only for economic success but also for protecting the very foundations of life.
What Is the Stop Ecocide Movement?
The movement was founded by British environmental lawyer Polly Higgins (1968–2019). Its goal: to recognize ecocide as an international crime under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC). This would mean that individuals—including business leaders and politicians—could be held criminally accountable if they commit or authorize severe environmental destruction.
Today, the organization Stop Ecocide International is driving this change worldwide, gaining increasing support from politics, science, and the business world. Companies like Landgut Stober demonstrate that sustainable business practices are not only possible but essential.
Why an International Ecocide Law Strengthens Businesses
Many companies already recognize that sustainability is a crucial competitive factor. A binding international ecocide law would:
✅ Secure the future – Protect ecosystems and livelihoods
✅ Establish clear regulations – Promote responsibility and sustainability
✅ Strengthen the economy – Drive sustainable investments and innovation
A healthy ecosystem is the foundation for long-term economic success. Companies that take responsibility today benefit from innovation, risk minimization, and stability – for themselves and for society as a whole.
