THE QUARTIER CHOPIN LANDAU REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT
Quartier Chopin Landau was developed by Michael Stober in 1998 as the first project of its kind in Rhineland-Palatinate to convert a former military site for civilian use.
In this context, conversion refers to the transformation of military facilities into spaces for civilian use. The opportunity arose following the withdrawal of French armed forces from the former garrison town of Landau in the Palatinate, as international tensions eased after the end of the Cold War and German reunification.
The departure of more than 10% of the town's population created a major urban planning challenge. The city of Landau successfully addressed this through the commitment and forward-thinking approach of its head of urban planning, Heder, and Mayor Dr Wolff, working alongside equally dedicated developers, architects and investors.
One example of this successful collaboration between public authorities and private partners is Quartier Chopin. The development comprises the former army bakery, the gunpowder and provisions depot, and several other buildings.
