Rethinking Water:
Rainwater Use for 363 Toilets at Landgut Stober
Water transition in everyday hotel life: how we save resources systematically at Landgut Stober
Since opening in 2012, we have been using a water management system that reduces drinking water consumption in our hotel operations. We are continuously developing this system further. As part of our "LS-Aqua-Balance" project, an existing well is to be technically reactivated and integrated into our current system.
All toilet flushes on our premises have always been supplied with rainwater via a secondary water circuit – fed from cisterns with a total volume of 400 cubic metres. This saves around 50% of fresh water every year and reduces our costs.
We also regulate the pressure at all tapping points individually with our own water pressure booster system. In combination with water-saving aerators on all taps, we reduce water consumption by a further 30 to 40% – without our guests or employees having to sacrifice comfort.
As part of "LS-Aqua-Balance", we are reactivating an existing well, equipping it with modern filter and control technology and integrating it into our secondary circuit. Continuous water quality monitoring is intended to ensure that the treated water meets the required quality standards.
This project is supported by the EU Cross-Re-Tour programme, more specifically by the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA). Thanks to the funding of 30,000 euros, we are realising the project together with experienced partners such as Sieber Brunnenbau Berlin. Our goal is clear: we want to further reduce our drinking water consumption and make ourselves as independent as possible from the public network in the long term – a great advantage, especially in times of low rainfall.
Our Water Management: Technology and Information in Everyday Life
Our water management does not just take place behind the scenes. Our guests and employees also gain insights into the technical measures. Small notices, for example on toilet lids, clearly explain how our rainwater cycle works and what the collected water is used for.
Through our water management system, we also want to show other businesses which technical options are available to reduce drinking water consumption.
The use of rainwater, water-saving fittings and the planned integration of an existing well are concrete measures through which we aim to further reduce our drinking water requirements.
We are continuously developing our water management system – step by step and drop by drop.
